Vivid Sky
This EP from young Torbay band Vivid Sky is remarkable in the apparent maturity of production and presentation. The vocalist Leila Jones has a fine rock voice – sometimes throaty, sometimes quite nasal - and the band has a tight but dirty feel to it. The style is hard rock tending into early metal rather than later styles and is all the more interesting for that – considering that most modern youngsters tend to militate towards thrashier models like punk and death metal. This is an excellent debut EP with 3 very different songs which give the band adequate opportunity to set out their stall. Matt Chalk's solo guitar work is exemplary and the song writing is pretty special too. The only thing lacking which would have illustrated their full range is a rip-roaring rocker in which Matt really gets the chance to let rip. But then I guess the whole tone of the release, which is quite sophisticated really, may have been radically altered to its own detriment. I hope this is just a taste of what may be yet to come from this exciting new group from Devon’s Rocky Red Coast!
