Guided By Lights: Evaporate, Warnings, Plans
3 tracks freely downloadable from Myspace
I have repeated many times before that I’m not a person who invests a lot of time listening to the words of songs. The overall musical sound is what’s ultimately important for me – you could sing Mein Kampf in Klingon, the London Telephone Directory or the ingredients from a packet of Chicken Tika Masala and I’d be happy if you did it well and in an interesting and innovative way.
So perhaps I’m not the best reviewer of what is essentially Folk Music – I maybe wrong but I’ve always had the impression the words are important to the exponents of this particular artform. Nevertheless, there’s something about the strikingly straightforward simplicity of these sounds from Guided By Lights that’s demanding of one’s attention.
And this is not just some sort of attraction on the grounds of novelty. I’ve now listened to these tracks about half a dozen times and I’m still pleased with what I’m hearing. In fact I think they improve with repetition and familiarity. As I said, I couldn’t really tell you what these songs are about – I really don’t care – but the music is fascinating, entertaining and well worth any effort you care to invest. This Brighton group deserves to succeed if they can maintain the quality in performance and develop the interest provided in the content if these 3 tracks are anything to judge them by.
They have offered to perform at the forthcoming Blaker’s Park Community Picnic. I very much look forward to seeing them do so.
