Old people like myself remember the Brighton Vaultage scene of the late 1970s with a great fondness. One name that sticks in mind is that of Helen McCookerybook of The Chefs and Helen & The Horns. They did a brilliant version of Chas McDevitt’s ‘Freight Train’ which I still like to play when I’m in that choo-choo sort of mood.
I came across Helen’s name on MySpace last week so decided to ‘add’ her. She messaged [note the modern use of verbs, here!] me back did I want to review her CD. How could I refuse???
What can I say? It’s lovely!
She sings such perfectly quirky little ditties and cunningly opens the album with a burst of pedal steel guitar which is always guaranteed to get my interest and guess who it is … yes.. none other than BJ Cole. This must be a measure of Helen’s standing in the modern music world! There’s nothing particularly clever one can say about this record – one just wants to fawn – it’s so delightful.
Thanks for sending it, Helen …. It’s gonna get played plenty!
