....is an epithet bandied around far too much, and is particularly used to boost sales of fairly ordinary collections of ambient-trance club mixes or albums of smooth light classical pops given away with the Sunday papers. So I'm hesitant to employ this well-worn phraseology to describe this record....
Aulis Sallinen: Chamber Music lll. lV, V
Arto Noras - Mika Vayrynen
Virtuosi di Kuhmo - Ralf Gothoni
CPO 777 147-2
...but somehow it just seems to fit. It is so gentle, so relaxing and meditational and although it does stray perilously close to being almost exciting in one or two places it never actually crosses any line which would stop it being the perfect record to play as background music while sitting trying to recover from a night on the tiles unable to quite get to sleep but when silence would set all sorts of cacophonies reverberating around one's damaged brain. This album will help you bring down the heart rate and the blood pressure enough to pass over to the nocturnal state one would rather be experiencing when thus impaired.
On the other hand it is a wonderfully suitable record to have on when one is in a much healthier state but just wants to take it easy in an ambient environment of modern sounding chamber music that will stimulate those alpha waves and allow you to pass the time in constructive mental activity without becoming hyperactive as a result. In other words ... the ultimate chillout.
