Phil Campbell: Joy

This is a CD that'll appeal to fans of Neil Young's more acoustic navel-gazing work. For me it's a bit lacking instrumentally - a bit short on guts, I'd say, but it ought to hit home in student garrets where there's a lot of respect for the singer-songwriter genre.
I'm trying not to be negative - suffice to say it's not exactly my cup o'chino.
Phil is a Glaswegian by birth and has apparently been quite well known for some 10 years - he was signed by EMI back in the mid-90s but didn't get on so well with them so has been floundering about a bit in the interim. The songs here are very well crafted and the production is superb, so if Phil fits your bag then I'd advise you check out this record. It deserves to be a success in the field I mentioned if not in a wider context.
