I’m trying to work through some of the marvellous music that MyFriends are sending me. This one is well worthwhile. Now my regular readers will know that Singer-Songwriters have to work hard to gain my respect and I confess that since I’ve been MySpacing I’m discovering more and more people fitting into this category who are making excellent music alongside writing impressive songs. Why we end up getting the same old dross being issued by the record companies is beyond me. Or maybe it isn’t – they’re obsessed with the quick buck whereas true music-lovers want the slow burn and lasting satisfaction from their records.

Ethan Gold is one such MyFriend – I don’t remember who added whom but I glad whichever of us did it did! He has a fine – no beautiful – voice, writes straightforward, yet haunting, powerful little songs and sets them into the firm foundations of catchy pleasant tunes. You can’t gainsay that, can you?
Moreover there’s one track called ‘On Edge (celestial porch)’ which goes well beyond the humdrum call of duty on this EP. The sinister words and the grating backing track really bring home the traumatic gut-wrenching pain experienced in the contemplation of putting an end to things so many young people go through. Those of us who have lost friends in such circumstances will empathise. It’s a very special piece of music, deserving to be heard far and wide.
